Leather Padfolio for Artists This case is based on the classic executive padfolio. But instead of a lame calculator slot, we’ve made one whole side all pen and pencil loops. It has room for a small laptop and standard clipboard, but is really designed around a 9×12 spiral bound sketchbook. Works great as a mobile desk when sketching at the park or coffee shop. Leather Pencil Case This case is perfect for mechanical pencils, pens, fineliners ect… You can buy the case only or the kit which comes with grayscale painted 2mm pencils (making use of 4H, HB, and 5B leads very intuitive) Amazon Store Link |
Leather Charcoal Pencil Case This case is slightly larger than the last one, fits a full size pencil. Versatile but especially great for charcoal artists. Put all the messy vine sticks in the zipper pouch to minimize some mess. Amazon Store Link |
Analog
Last week was all video links so I thought this Friday around we would go analog!
Only books…
Loomis: Drawing the Head and Hands The Loomis method is a classic and very effective approach for many artist. The link is to a free pdf. If you have trouble with it just google “Loomis Method Pdf” it’s posted multiple places.
Nicolaids “The Natural Way to Draw” Another classic but quite different approach to drawing. He writes: “Learning to draw is really a matter of learning to see correctly and that means a good deal more than looking with the eye”. (The link is to Amazon)
Mann Vol. 1.7 The Sketchbooks There is something addictive about getting to dig through another artists sketchbook. Which is great when artists publish them! Its a chance for us to support fellow artists (with out spending 5k on a painting) and lets us learn as we watch their visual progress through the pages of their personal and intimate sketch book (Links to artist website)
Alla Prima - Schmid JIC for the 2 or 3 people out there who don’t already have this book. Primarily for painters, there is a great section on drawing however. (Links to artist website) Some gems:
“Contrary to popular belief, it is the mouth, not the eyes, that conveys the majority of facial expression”
“More over, it is not easy to identify shapes when the indistinct edges and blend into other shapes. Nevertheless, that is what must be done, because painting the innocence in a childs expression is impossible, but painting the pattern of colors that create the expression is possible”
Sketching in Nature - Cathy Johnson If you’ve ever wanted to fill up your own nature sketch book, wandering the forest like Thoreau and taking notes, then you’ll like this book. It’s A to Z coverage so good for the beginner and expert alike.
All these books are in my library (except for the Loomis PDF, which I printed out years ago so still counts as analog!). But one more book that I haven’t read, I just bought it today: Stonehouse's Anatomy This looks like a fun one, written by an illustrator but it’s in depth anatomy so I expect a lot of crossover for fine arts (Links to SuperAni website).
Have a super great wonderful art filled weekend!
