Virtuosity
Every once in awhile, whether you’re walking down a traveled path or bushwhacking, it’s important to look up, and fix some distant landmarks. After all no one enjoys walking in circles thinking they are making forward progress.
So, in your drawing practice, do you ever look up and think about where you want to end up? After all, there are many different ways to translate the visual world before you onto a piece of paper. What’s your goal. Where do you want to end up??
Now true virtuosity requires a narrowing of focus, specialization, pushing that one dimension to it’s limits. And push those limits, I’m cheering for you!
But I’d also like to remind you, that if your building a pyramid as high as you can, at some point you realize that you can’t build high enough just stacking one brick on top of another. Eventually you have to broaden the base.
So that‘s what the following links are about. Broadening your base. And if your early on your path, it’s good to experiment, see what resonates with you and where you want to put most of your energy.
As you watch these videos, keep in mind the goal is process, not product. More importantly - visual translation. The world isn’t made up of pencil lines. It’s up to us to imagine those lines. The following videos go over various ways to visually translate the world into pencil lines (or brush strokes ect…).
Some subjects are more easily translated in one way or another, that’s OK. Focus on trying to see the world the way the artist demonstrating see’s their subject.
