Book Recommendation
Our quote from Picasso at the beginning of this newsletter clearly inspired Austin Kleons book “Steal Like an Artist”

Its a quick, easy read but filled with nuggets that will leave you thinking about them long after you put the book down.
One of my favorite thoughts from the book is the idea of an artist family tree. When there is an artist you particularly find inspiring, how do you study their work? Just mindlessly copying their work only gets you so far. Good for learning technique and building skills, but rather lifeless. What’s the next step for taking your inspiration from your favorite artist and putting it into your own personal work?
You build a family tree. You start studying the artists that influenced the one that you admire. Work backwards, study the artists they studied and build an artist family tree.
Trojan Horse Was a Unicorn
The photo links to The Sketchbook Series - Jeremy Mann on Youtube. But maker sure you check out some others in the series as well. I particularly enjoyed Karl Kopinskis. Not only do you get to peak into some phenomenal artists sketchbooks but you can watch their process too.
